Welcome. I’m Jacqui Dunbar, a freelance human rights, participation, and development expert.
I have 25 years working with national and local government, charities and public bodies. I have developed and managed a wide range of projects and teams, with an emphasis on people whose rights are most at risk.
I have worked freelance since 2021. My focus is on: human rights and trauma-informed approaches; the participation of babies, children, young people, and adults; and influencing policy and strategy through practice.
I have expertise in using creative approaches and pride myself on a relationship-based approach in everything I do.
I am also a professional photographer, specialising in events and portraiture.
About me
I have worked with government, national and local charities for 25 years in the areas of children’s human rights, participation, and trauma informed approaches. Using skills in development and management I have focused on projects which aim to bring about change and empower babies, children, young people and adults whose rights are most at risk.
I have been a freelance expert in these areas for the last 4 years. My work continues to be based on a deep commitment to human rights, the positive power of relationships, and a desire to build creativity into all the work I do.
Examples of my recent work includes:
Working with Together (Scottish Alliance for Children’s Rights) developed the Rights Detectives, an expert group of children and young people who undertake investigative research to inform SG, UN Committee and Together members. Co-ordinated UK delegation of children and young people to Geneva to give evidence to UN Committee.
Resilience Learning Partnership - working with 'Leaders with Lived Experience’ on people-led project development. Offering leadership mentoring, organisational development, programme management and team support.
Children and Young People's Commissioner for Scotland - supporting co-design and delivery of consultation with children across Scotland on strategic plan.
With Kids - working with another consultant on 24 month programme to embed The Promise into child therapy service.
In organisational roles, I was the first Project Lead for Our Hearings, Our Voice from 2018 - 2021, a national board of children and young people which aims to improve the Children’s Hearing System. I worked at Barnardo’s Scotland from 2004 - 2018 where I had responsibility for participation and national development projects.
